E&T World Cup blog: day eleven, Spain vs Honduras

And the World Cup continues to spring surprises! Yesterday’s Italy vs New Zealand game was another turn up for the books (1-1) and a triumph for our resident psychic Laura. The only one of our predicting panel – and possibly the only person outside New Zealand – who thought the Kiwis would get something out of the game, her proclamation of a draw proved refreshingly accurate.

Today it’s the turn of another so-called giant to get its World Cup campaign back on track, as Spain takes on Honduras (Spain being the so-called giant in this equation). Widely touted as the tournament favourites – ahead of Brazil for many pundits – if Spain don’t win today, there’s a distinct possibility of them leaving South Africa on the first boat. Adios, amigos.

Here are today’s predictions from our panel:

  • Dr Ian McHale, a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Salford: “Spain.”
  • David Williams, head of PR at Ladbrokes: “Spain”.
  • Chris Day, goalkeeper for Stevenage FC: “4-0 to Spain.”
  • Laura Daligan, ‘psychic, artist and pin-up’: “Honduras will play well, this seems to be a very good match, however I feel Spain will just win.”

No hope for the Hondurans, then? It’s like Cortez and his conquistadors all over again. E&T secretly hopes Honduras has got Simon Bolivar up front to assert some independence.

These are just predictions, of course – what will the reality be? Why not add your comments and predictions below?

Remember: this is just for fun and all predictions are for entertainment only. Any mortgages lost or other sums squandered based on the information supplied are your own responsibility! And yes, I will keep mentioning this every day. Ain’t no stopping me now.

Incidentally, if you want to read our magazine feature on the science of football prediction, I can heartily recommend it. If you’re not much of a reader, wear your eyeballs out on the accompanying football predictions video.
