E&T World Cup blog: day fifteen, Portugal vs Brazil

Portugal vs Brazil: could this be a warm-up for the final itself? With the French and Italians gone, the field is certainly opening up. Portugal’s demolition of North Korea might be a little misleading, but they’ve looked good in other games. And Brazil, to paraphrase Clarence Seedorf, are Brazil.

There’s also Holland, Germany, Argentina and England, of course, plus teams like Uruguay and Japan waiting in the wings to spring a surprise. Yep, the group stages might be nearly over, which means less all-day football fun, but the knockout stages are going to exciting.

Anyway, Portugal vs Brazil, Ronaldo vs Ronaldinho, the big Ronald smackdown.

Here are today’s predictions from our panel:

  • Dr Ian McHale, a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Salford: “Deco injured, but still difficult to call. If in doubt, go with the maths: Brazil it is.”
  • David Williams, head of PR at Ladbrokes: “Draw”.
  • Chris Day, goalkeeper for Stevenage FC: “1-1.”
  • Laura Daligan, ‘psychic, artist and pin-up’: “It will be a nail biter, but last minute I feel Brazil will make it through.”

Half and half: two for a draw, two for a Brazil win. Brazil are already through, of course, and Portugal virtually there, so not much to play for. But pride is pride, so if one of them could nick it, that’s a nice psychological boost to take in to the next round.

These are just predictions, of course – what will the reality be? Why not add your comments and predictions below?

Remember: this is just for fun and all predictions are for entertainment only. Any mortgages lost or other sums squandered based on the information supplied are your own responsibility! And yes, I will keep mentioning this every day. I’m as committed to this as a Slovakian defender.

Incidentally, if you want to read our magazine feature on the science of football prediction, I can heartily recommend it. If you’re not much of a reader, wear your eyeballs out on the accompanying football predictions video.

  1. Sorry to get ahead of things here, but I’m thinking England and penalties.

The BBC’s ‘More or Less’ programme has just broadcast the claim that Germany have been 94 per cent successful in 5-penalty shootouts since 1960, while England have been 50 per cent successful. The programme concludes that they chances of England winning in a five-penalty shootout are 1.04 per cent, “and that’s rounding up…”.

Personally, I think England should grow up and win 3-1 in 90 mins.
