Germany 4 – England 1. No hyperbolic inquest, no hysterical rhetoric, no demands for everyone involved to be sacked and/or publicly flogged. E&T can safely leave all that to the British tabloid newspapers.
England just weren’t all that good, were they? Every time England attacked, they floundered on the Germans’ 18-yard line. Every time the Germans attacked, well, they scored. That’s how to win a game.
Anyway, on to bigger and – quite literally – better things: Brazil vs Chile. Potential champions vs potential surprise package. All the fun of the knockout rounds, with a sensual Latino twist. Yes, it’s the big South American smackdown, as that massive jungle-packed behemoth with the sexy beaches takes on that long thin country what makes nice wine on the opposite coast.
Here are today’s predictions from our panel:
- Dr Ian McHale, a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Salford: “It has to be Brazil.”
- David Williams, head of PR at Ladbrokes: “Brazil.”
- Chris Day, goalkeeper for Stevenage FC: “2-0 to Brazil.”
- Laura Daligan, ‘psychic, artist and pin-up’: “Brazil play with such passion and freedom, they seem too strong to ignore.”
Brazil all the way, then. Sorry, Chileans. Pour yourselves a lovely cold glass of Concha y Toro Sunrise Sauvignon Blanc (other wines are available) by way of compensation.
These are just predictions, of course – what will the reality be? Why not add your comments and predictions below? Yesterday’s predictions resulted in another 50/50 triumph for the panel, if predicting an England spanking can reasonably be called a triumph. Psychic Laura has been right both times about England. We say Laura Daligan for new England manager!
By the way, we will work out some sort of funky bar graph for the group stages prediction results and get that up here tomorrow. Watch this space, stats fans!
Remember: this is just for fun and all predictions are for entertainment only. Any mortgages lost or other sums squandered based on the information supplied are your own responsibility! And yes, I will keep mentioning this every day. No Germans are going to stop me!
Incidentally, if you want to read our magazine feature on the science of football prediction, I can heartily recommend it. If you’re not much of a reader, wear your eyeballs out on the accompanying football predictions video.
