E&T World Cup blog: the Predictions Final

So that’s it, World Cup 2010 is over. Spain have gone home with the trophy (the very next day, in fact, no lounging around the hotel pool for them), while Holland have gone home with a wholly inappropriate sense of injustice, blaming Howard Webb for everything. Aah, what would football be without an unhealthy dose of jingoistic antagonism? Anyway, with the World Cup over, what of our predicting panel? With the final Final whistle blown, who has topped the group table and who is on a metaphorical early plane home? After 25 games, what are the final scores? This snappy … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: the Predictions Final

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty five, Holland vs Spain – the World Cup Final

So here we are: the World Cup Final. After a month of titillatingly unpredictable football (England’s anti-climactic early exit notwithstanding) we have but one game left: the  final game in every sense. Holland vs Spain. Who will win the World Cup? With a little over half an hour until kick off, the time for talking is over, even if TV coverage has already started and the time for talking as far as they’re concerned is clearly a long way from any conclusion and may continue long after the final Final final whistle. Shortly, two teams will take to the field: … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty five, Holland vs Spain – the World Cup Final

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty four, Germany vs Uruguay

So the remorseless German machine (TM) finally ground to a halt. The tournament’s surprise free-scoringest team failed to make any impression whatsoever on the Spanish goal and the tournament’s most underwhelmingist team continued to limp towards the final. Ironically kinda reminiscent of the German team sneaking in to the Final in Korea in 2002, innit though? What is it with the Spanish? How can a team so widely touted as the favourites be so dull to watch for such long periods of every game? To paraphrase the old Arsenal adage, E&T is getting a bit fed up of 1-0 to … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty four, Germany vs Uruguay

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty three, Spain vs Germany

And then there were three. Holland are now in the World Cup Final, awaiting the winners of Spain vs Germany tonight, after the clog-happy tulip munchers glided past Uruguay last night. A fairly dull first half was livened up by two cracking goals, one from Giovanni van Broccolihorse for Holland and one from Diego Forlan for Uruguay, where that wacky ball actually held a straight and true line from boot to net each time. In the second half, it all went decidedly Holland’s way, apart from the last two minutes of injury time when it seemed like the referee was … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty three, Spain vs Germany

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty two, Uruguay vs Holland

A lot of football water has flowed under the World Cup bridge since last we wrote, not least the total elimination from proceedings of Brazil and Argentina. Ay caramba! Our entire panel got the Argie/Bosh game wrong, roundly proclaiming a triumph for Argentina and – in one case – a good trampling for the Germans. The Hun are looking pretty untrampleable now, aren’t they? Right you are, Clarence! What was even more shocking to E&T was the list of national management heads that have, quite literally, “rolled” following their team’s early exit. MOTD2 did a slideshow of Those We Have … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty two, Uruguay vs Holland

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty one, Argentina vs Germany

Goodbye, cruel World Cup, as the last African nation and adopted host country Ghana exited after losing a penalty shoot out to Uruguay. As our resident psychic Laura predicted, Ghana did indeed fight the good fight, but it was Uruguay that prevailed. Drama of the highest order preceded the shoot out, however, with Ghana awarded a regular penalty in the last second of extra time when the teams were still in open play. It was literally the last kick of the game. Get it right, Ghana are in the semi finals. Get it wrong, advantage Uruguay. Asamoah Gyan got it wrong: … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty one, Argentina vs Germany

E&T World Cup blog: day twenty, Uruguay vs Ghana

Yeah, baby! We’re back! It’s another Jules Rimet-licious World Cup day, as Uruguay take on Ghana in this evening’s quarter-final game. Groovy, baby! It feels like ages since we last watched a football match and hopefully it’ll be nothing but mini finals from here on in until the maxi final next Sunday. Uruguay vs Ghana has all the makings of a thrilling roustabout goalfest (TM) as Uruguay have scored a decent number of goals thus far – not for them the 1-0 squeaky bum win – and Ghana have the hopes of the entire African continent riding on their shoulders, … Continue reading E&T World Cup blog: day twenty, Uruguay vs Ghana
