The self-targeting dartboard

Anyone who’s ever played darts after a few beers will probably have had times when they were sure that the dartboard moved out of the way of their dart. Well, what if it were the other way around…?

One of the more ‘creative’ demos at NIWeek is a dartboard that automatically moves to intercept the shot – in this case, a foam dart from a Nerf gun. It’s a sophisticated bit of kit – optical sensors track the dart against a fluorescent hood and then mechanical actuators move the target in a split-second.

To make it a bit more scientific, the gun is also sensored-up and its sensors synced to the rest of the gear, so the game can tell you muzzle velocity, time to target, and velocity on target as well.
