All Quiet on the Eastern Front

Over two months have passed since the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami hit Japan, and all has gone eerily quiet from the East. Not to be missed: BBC2 series “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace”

DON’T MISS “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” – a series of three mesmerising films showing on BBC2, created by Bafta award-winning film maker Adam Curtis. This fascinating series examines the idea that the way we see the world today is a distortion of reality, created by the computers that we built. In his unique way (if a little bewildering at times), Curtis explores the notion that rather than liberating us, computers have simplified our view of the world and are dictating how we live. The first episode in the series, Love and Power, was aired on Monday … Continue reading Not to be missed: BBC2 series “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace”

The bicycle thief

Like many Londoners, I’ve rediscovered the joy and practicality of cycling. I bought a Trek last year, but I didn’t realise that it was manufactured by Giant bicycles. They also make bikes for other well known brands such as Dahon. Visiting their factory and HQ in Taiwan was highly enjoyable – and educational. Rather unwisely, they allowed me to test ride one of their hybrid commuter bikes. Here I am puffing away trying to negotiate the traffic – really stretching The IET’s insurance liability and explaining some more info about Giant. Kris Sangani Continue reading The bicycle thief

adaptor powerhouse is surprisingly innovative

I’m currently in Taiwan visiting several Taiwanese brands. One of the highlights of day one was a visit to the HQ of Delta, manufacturers of one of the most boring products in the world, power adaptors. But this company turns out to be very innovative. They have their fingers in a number of pies, such as solar, hybrid electrics vehicles and commercial displays. Below is a demonstration of the company’s short throw OHP video system – which overcomes the problem of shadows in front of the screen. Because of the company’s links with Microsoft Kinect, Delta is looking to market … Continue reading adaptor powerhouse is surprisingly innovative
