#CostaConcordia salvage operation redux – an annotated graphic

Having posted a Costa Concordia salvage infographic exactly one month ago today, now here we have another – the companion piece, so to speak. It has been reported that a Dutch salvage vessel, the Dockwise Vanguard, the world’s largest semi-submersible ship, could be used to lift and ferry away the now-righted Costa Concordia. More typically used to move oil rigs about the place, Dockwise Vanguard has signed on to the project in a £19 million deal. The intention is to ultimately strip and scrap the Costa Concordia, so in light of this deal that must be some pretty lucrative scrap … Continue reading #CostaConcordia salvage operation redux – an annotated graphic

#AlfaRomeo 4C carbon fibre sports coupe preview – an annotated graphic

One for the petrolheads today, as we preview the new Alfa Romeo 4C sports coupe. Apparently this is the world’s first production car to feature “prepreg” carbon fibre technology. Exciting, huh? Carbon fibre was chosen for the one-piece monocoque due its high levels of structural rigidity and exceptionally low weight (a trifling 65kg) and the car has been constructed using sophisticated Formula 1-derived technologies. If nothing else, we hope they retain those snazzy Italian-flag wing mirrors in the production model. Francesco Bernouilli would be so proud. No mention of price yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar (and presumably … Continue reading #AlfaRomeo 4C carbon fibre sports coupe preview – an annotated graphic

Mangalyaan, India’s mission to Mars – an annotated graphic

It’s getting crowded out there on Mars. As if myriad Rovers traversing the Red Planet’s surface weren’t enough, now every Tom, Dick and Harri are sending interplanetary craft (Carpenters music optional) in its direction. The latest nation state to fling some space hardware Mars-wards is India. Its Mangalyaan Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) will perform a 160-day study of the planet as it orbits in an elliptical journey. If all goes well, more MOMs will follow. Click on the graphic for an expanded view. Continue reading Mangalyaan, India’s mission to Mars – an annotated graphic

Olympic Torch journey to the #Sochi2014 Winter Olympics – an annotated graphic

Ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi next year, the Olympic flame recently arrived in Moscow’s Red Square, where President Vladimir Putin lit the Olympic relay torch. And then presumably had the Russian Secret Service slip a bug in to the flame housing in order to monitor the conversation of every runner unlucky enough to carry it in the coming months. Ah, Cold War paranoia, how we’ve missed your suspicious embrace! Games consoles 2014 – beyond the #PS4, #Xbox, #WiiU – an annotated graphic

Never mind your Sony Playstations, your Microsoft Xboxes and your Nintendo Wii-Us. Today’s infographic celebrates the lesser-known lights of the gaming world: the Ouya, the GameStick, the M.O.J.O., the Steam Machine and more. Whilst unlikely to have the gaming giants quaking in their pixellated boots, this is a refreshing crop of pretty cheap and plenty cheerful alternatives, attractive as both an entry-level introduction to modern gaming and as a left-turn adjunct to the big boys’ mainstream offerings’. It’s the gaming equivalent of crate-digging in an independent record shop. Click on the graphic for an expanded view.
