#Sewol ferry capsizes – hundreds of passengers still missing – two annotated infographics

Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry with 476 passengers on board capsized and sank off South Korea’s southwest coast yesterday.

Most of the passengers were school students. Only a small number of people have been confirmed dead so far, with dozens of others injured, although the rescue operation is being hampered by strong sea currents every time the tide changes.

The latest news is that there may still be survivors alive on board the capsized ship, sheltering in air pockets inside the stricken hull. Time will tell if this hope is borne out.
