One in the eye for Islamic State as Syria’s Palmyra Arch is recreated using 3D technology – an annotated infographic

A replica of the 2,000-year-old Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, pointlessly destroyed in 2015 by Islamic State fighters in Syria, has been erected in London’s Trafalgar Square. The scale model was constructed from Egyptian marble using 3D technology. It may not be the original antiquity, but at least its artistic and cultural heritage has not been lost forever, now that its essential form has been captured and preserved for the ages. Metal 3D printing and the future of nuclear fusion

Will the next tokamak be 3D printed?  How can metal 3D printing help change the future of nuclear fusion? Watch our latest interview, this time with Chris Waldon from the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. The Culham folks are taking part in the Amaze project, coordinated by the European Space Agency, trying to set standards for metal 3D printing parts for high-tech, high-stress applications. Video: 3D printing in the age of metal and the future of aerospace

Watch our video interview with David Jarvis from the European Space Agency who is coordinating the pan-European AMAZE project. At the end of the 5-year endeavour, Europe should have a proper metal 3D printing infrastructure to serve not only the aerospace industry but also, for example, nuclear fusion. We have talked about why is 3D printing of metal so complicated and what it would require to 3D print at the International Space Station. Everyone in the industry seems excited about the new technology promising creating bespoke alloys with unprecedented qualities and tuning designs in a way that has so far … Continue reading Video: 3D printing in the age of metal and the future of aerospace

The Future is Here: A New Industrial Revolution

Reporter Edd Gent visited the press launch of the Design Museum’s latest exhibition, The Future is Here: a New Industrial Revolution, to speak curator Alex Newson about the impact digital manufacturing is having on the way we view the process of design and creation. The museum is collaborating with the Technology Strategy Board to showcase the sweeping changes in manufacturing that are transforming the world and the relationships between manufacturer and consumer. The exhibition, which opened today, will house the first “factory” of its kind where visitors can discover how 3D printing works and witness live production. Other exhibits include … Continue reading The Future is Here: A New Industrial Revolution

3D printers on your desk – an annotated graphic

Forget printing in two dimensions – that’s so flat, so last year. The future is undoubtedly printing in three dimensions. There are plenty of applications for this sort of technology, from manufacturers creating working prototypes to conceptual artists printing out 3D weirdness, as E&T has been busy investigating in recent months.
