Smartphone global market share 2014 – #Samsung down, everyone else up – an annotated infographic

Short and sweet today – unless you happen to be a major shareholder in Samsung. According to the latest figures, comparing smartphone market share from the last quarter of 2014 with the same period in 2013, the major players all increased market share, apparently at the expense of Samsung. The Korean kopy kat saw its smartphone market share slide almost 9 per cent, down to 20 per cent overall, with its mobile division posting a wallet-troubling 64 per cent decline in profits. Saying that, it still trousered a cosy $1.8 billion so, you know. Up one day, down the next. 24 hours after the internet’s collective jaw dropped at its $18 billion profit from the last quarter of 2014, Apple today finds itself jerked back from metaphorically luxuriating on a silk mattress stuffed with $1,000 dollar bills atop a solid gold bed with a mink-covered, diamond-studded headboard to answer awkward questions about the battery life of the forthcoming Watch. #Apple profits go through the roof as the #iPhone6 takes off in China – an annotated infographic

Apple: officially not short of a few quid. The California-based, Chinese manufacturer-preferring computer giant reported first quarter profits of $18 billion – the biggest ever made by a public company. The profits were boosted by record sales of iPhones, with Apple shifting 74.5 million iPhones in the three months to December 27. It seems redundant to qualify this statement by adding that this was well ahead of most analysts’ expectations. Ironically, it’s the Chinese thinking global, buying local that has powered much of this growth, with sales up over 70 per cent in that territory. Apparently this iPhone boom equates … Continue reading #Apple profits go through the roof as the #iPhone6 takes off in China – an annotated infographic

Apple’s traditional absence from the monstrous, sprawling geek and gadget-fest that is the Consumer Electronics Show in the quaint, understated little burg of Las Vegas has done little to prevent the Apple Watch being one of the hot topics of the week. Apple itself might not officially be exhibiting, but plenty of other companies are and many of them are frothing excitedly about their accessories for the Apple Watch and other products that integrate with Apple’s HomeKit, the framework in iOS 8 for communicating with and controlling connected accessories in a user’s home.
