Volcanic heat source found beneath Antarctic glacier – an annotated infographic

While analysing Antarctic water samples, scientists have discovered a substantial volcanic heat source beneath Pine Island Glacier. Elevated levels of helium-3 gas detected in the waters around Pine Island glacier indicate volcanic activity beneath the ice sheet – exhibiting as much as 25 times more thermal energy than a dormant volcano. The volcanic heat source is one more factor to account for when modelling the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Shelf. The shelf’s stability has serious implications for the future of sea level rising. Click on the graphic for an expanded view. #DonaldTrump pulls US out of #ParisAgreement – an annotated infographic

President Donald Trump has decided in his infinite wisdom, doubtless having brought his deep understanding of an incredibly complex scientific issue to bear on the matter, that the world’s climate will be best served by the largest polluting nation on the planet no longer being part of the coordinated fight to reverse the negative impacts on climate change of said nation (and all other nations – including Russia – who are still perfectly prepared to remain united). The decision is typical of the man’s single-minded leadership style. The 2015 Paris agreement aims to keep global temperatures “well below” 2.0 degrees … Continue reading #DonaldTrump pulls US out of #ParisAgreement – an annotated infographic

#ClimateChange poised to bite hardest on the world’s poorest people – an annotated infographic

More bad news for the world’s poor – which, lets face it, is most of us: a World Bank report has determined that climate change caused by increasing greenhouse gases could see the world’s poor rise by over 100 million. Particularly affected will be those people living in extreme poverty in Africa and South Asia, the numbers of which are expected to rise dramatically by 2030. Alaskan permafrost to thaw this century – mucho methane gas released – an annotated infographic

A leading geophysicist believes that recent temperature rises in Alaska indicate that the permafrost will thaw in some parts by 2070, releasing methane gas into the atmosphere and exacerbating climate change. #Climatechange continues to heat up planet Earth as 2014 sets new record – an annotated infographic

As rapper, bon viveur and keen amateur climatologist (we’re guessing) Nelly once so memorably said: it’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes. The year 2014 has now officially been declared the warmest year across global land and ocean surfaces since records began in 1880. The annually-averaged temperature was 0.69°C above the 20th-century average of 13.9°C, breaking the previous records of 2005 and 2010 by 0.04°C . This also marks the 38th consecutive year that the yearly global temperature was above average. Deny that, climate change deniers. Either way, we’d all be well advised to keep our … Continue reading #Climatechange continues to heat up planet Earth as 2014 sets new record – an annotated infographic

#Nasa OCO-2 satellite will measure carbon dioxide levels in Earth’s atmosphere – an annotated infographic

Nasa is scheduled to launch its first spacecraft dedicated to measuring carbon dioxide levels in Earth’s atmosphere on July 2014. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission will provide a more complete, global picture of the human and natural sources of carbon dioxide, as well as “sinks” – such as forests and oceans – which absorb and trap the gas. OCO-2 will be Nasa’s second attempt to launch a satellite specifically for the purpose of monitoring carbon dioxide. The first OCO launch in 2009 unfortunately failed to reach orbit. At approximately 400 parts per million, atmospheric carbon dioxide is now at … Continue reading #Nasa OCO-2 satellite will measure carbon dioxide levels in Earth’s atmosphere – an annotated infographic

Big trucks and luxury cars at #DetroitMotorShow – an annotated graphic

According to that hazy collection of commentators, know-it-alls and obsessive-compulsives collectively known as “industry experts”, in this case automotive industry experts, 2013 has been deemed the year of the truck and the luxury car at the Detroit Motor Show. Some very shiny, powerful and expensive machines were on show – Ferrari 458 Spyder, Chevrolet Corvette, we’re looking at you – so it’s reassuring to know that the gas-guzzling petrolheads of the world haven’t been forgotten in these days of diminishing fossil fuels and accelerating climate change. With the origami kayak, you can fold your own boat – an annotated graphic

Never mind iPads, Furbies, Chromebooks and such like. What we want for Christmas now is an origami kayak. Yes, the wearying days of hoisting a full-size boat around with you all the time are now a thing of the past, as the world’s first foldable canoe is now a reality.
