Book Review: Design Meets Disability – Graham Pullin

By Jade Fell “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry From their humble beginnings, balanced on the noses of monks and scholars in the 13th century, eyeglasses have undergone a fantastic transformation. The handheld lorgnette donned by ladies in the 19th century gave way to the inexpensive pince-nez of the early 20th  – but It was not until the latter half of the century that eyeglasses were transformed from a mere medical necessity to something more. In Design Meets Disability, author Graham Pullin … Continue reading Book Review: Design Meets Disability – Graham Pullin

#WhatsApp hits 800 million active users – an annotated infographic

WhatsApp, the messaging service that lets you text other users for free, now has 800 million active users every month. The app sends messages over the internet, bypassing a phone carrier’s text messaging charges. WhatsApp is a solid poster boy for spectacular dotcom success, going from zero value as a start-up company in 2009 to the point at which Facebook hoovered it up for a tidy $19bn in 2014. Not bad for five years’ work, all told. Click on the graphic for an expanded view. Continue reading #WhatsApp hits 800 million active users – an annotated infographic

Check out the wearable technology, hype or happening issue of E&T online. The wearable technology market has exploded. There are plenty of activity trackers, e-health monitors and smartwatches, but all too often the focus has been on emerging technology rather than the design. Yet product design is vital to commercial success, as consumers will only want to buy a device that complements their desired look. The burgeoning smartwatch market looks set to explode with the imminent April release of the Apple Watch. App makers are hoping for the same kind of gold rush that arrived with the iPhone App Store in 2008 and have been metaphorically hopping excitedly from foot to foot since the Apple Watch launch event. There has also been widespread interwebs carping about the projected battery life of Watch. … Continue reading #Smartwatch market set to explode as clock ticks down to #AppleWatch launch – an annotated infographic

#NSA accused of hiding #spyware deep within computer hard drives – an annotated infographic

In the week that the Edward Snowden documentary “Citizenfour” won the Best Documentary award at the Oscars, it should come as no surprise to hear that the U.S. National Security Agency – the NSA to its friends – has been hiding spyware deep within computer hard drives made by top manufacturers, giving the agency the means to eavesdrop on the majority of the world’s computers. #Apple #iPhone6 is a new threat to Samsung’s sliding market share – an annotated infographic

It’s been a topsy-turvy week for Apple, first with the news that it was probably a vulnerability in its iCloud service that was exploited in order to winkle out amateur-ish, pseudo-saucy photos of foolish celebrity ladies; then the news that it probably wasn’t iCloud’s fault; to finally the announcement from its 2012 arch eco-nemesis Greenpeace that Apple is now looking pretty spiffy in the renewable energy department – much classier than Microsoft, Google and Amazon, for instance. Now with the iPhone 6 launch imminent, Apple is looking forward to giving its most-hated market rival Samsung a sound kicking in the … Continue reading #Apple #iPhone6 is a new threat to Samsung’s sliding market share – an annotated infographic
