Kerch Strait bridge linking Crimea to Russia opens ahead of schedule – an annotated infographic

The bridge linking Crimea to Russia over the Kerch Strait across the Black Sea has opened six months ahead of schedule. The 19km road-and-rail bridge is a flagship political project for Russia, as it seeks to cement its hold on Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in 2014 after an unrecognised referendum on unification with Russia. The bridge, which some Russians have dubbed “Putin’s bridge”, will be the longest dual-purpose span in Europe. For the bridge to overcome treacherous conditions in the region, thousands of pylons have been driven into the seabed for stability, with space in between to allow strong currents … Continue reading Kerch Strait bridge linking Crimea to Russia opens ahead of schedule – an annotated infographic

Greenpeace finds coral reef in Total’s Amazon drilling area – an annotated infographic

Scientists aboard a Greenpeace ship have discovered that a massive coral reef near the mouth of the Amazon extends further than thought, overlapping areas where French company Total plans to drill for oil. The research could further complicate plans by oil companies to explore an area that some geologists say could hold up to 14 billion barrels of petroleum – more than the entire proven reserves in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2013, Total led a group including Britain’s BP Plc and Brazilian state-run oil company Petrobras in buying five exploration blocks in the Foz do Amazonas basin, but the … Continue reading Greenpeace finds coral reef in Total’s Amazon drilling area – an annotated infographic

Prehistoric cave art in Spain suggests Neanderthals were artists – an annotated infographic

Scientists have found the first major evidence that Neanderthals, rather than modern humans, created the world’s oldest known cave paintings – suggesting they may have had an artistic sense similar to our own. Published in the journal Science, a new study led by the University of Southampton and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology shows that paintings in three caves in Spain were created more than 64,000 years ago – 20,000 years before modern humans arrived in Europe. This means that the Palaeolithic (Ice Age) cave art – including pictures of animals, dots and geometric signs – must have … Continue reading Prehistoric cave art in Spain suggests Neanderthals were artists – an annotated infographic
