Solar Impulse 2, the plane powered only by energy from the Sun, has completed its 15-month mission to circumnavigate the world. Landing in Abu Dhabi yesterday – where it first took off in March 2015 – the plane finally completed its epic 25,000-mile record-breaking journey. #SolarImpulse flies again, from Japan to Hawaii – an annotated infographic

As Great Britain basks in glorious sunshine, our summer having finally got its act together for a few consecutive days at least, it seems an apposite time to hear once again about the solar-powered plane attempting to circumnavigate the globe, powered by nothing more than the warming, energising rays of our distant but radiant star friend, the Sun. After waiting for two months in Japan for a break in the weather, for that meteorological metaphorical window of opportunity to slide open, Solar Impulse 2 has begun its journey from Japan to Hawaii – a scorching, high-altitude trip that will take … Continue reading #SolarImpulse flies again, from Japan to Hawaii – an annotated infographic

Ain’t no sunshine – #SolarImpulse plane forced to land due to bad weather – an annotated infographic

For the first time, inclement weather has obliged Solar Impulse 2 to land. The record-breaking attempt to cross the Pacific Ocean in a solar-powered plane was aborted after bad weather forced the pilot to make an unscheduled stop in the Japanese city of Nagoya. The crossing was part of the plane’s attempt to circumnavigate the globe using only the energy of the Sun. E&T reported on this latest development in the Solar Impulse 2 story in full yesterday. #SolarImpulse coast-to-coast flight across the US – an annotated graphic

She’s already up, up, up in the air, as the Solar Impulse plane starts her coast-to-coast journey across the USA, so we thought this was – quite literally – “high” time to share this annotated graphic about her journey. Her design form, necessitated by solar-panel function, may look a bit bonkers (part Playmobil glider, part dragonfly), but her ambition is real. God speed you, solar empress!
