Singapore to test done delivery system with help from Airbus – an annotated infographic

To explore how delivery drones could be used, Singapore has turned to Airbus to test a drone delivery service. The Skyways project aims to use drones to provide an efficient delivery service of small parcels to staff and students across the campus of the National University of Singapore. If the university test is successful, the system could be extended to service ships anchored in the Port of Singapore. Click on the graphic for an expanded view. Virtual reality, immersive experiences and drones in flight at #CES2016

Two of the most popular show areas at CES 2016 are virtual reality – be that immersive and/or augmented – and drones. Inevitably, Oculus Rift dominated the VR space – literally, given the size of Oculus’ enormous two-level exhibition stand – and the lure of the most famous VR headset for show attendees was apparent in their willingness to queue for two and a half hours just to be able to try it for themselves. Of course, Oculus Rift is not the only VR game in town. Other VR projects, such as Google’s Cardboard, are broadening the technology’s reach and … Continue reading Virtual reality, immersive experiences and drones in flight at #CES2016

China unveils Rainbow 5 mega killer #drone design – an annotated infographic

China has conducted the first test flight of its largest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to date, named CH-5 or Rainbow 5 (really?). The style and design of Rainbow 5 bears more than a passing resemblance to the US Reaper drone. Cute name, familiar design, it’s still an automated killing machine. All together now: Up above the streets and houses, Rainbow climbing high… Click on the graphic for an expanded view. Droning on about #drones at the #ParisAirShow – an annotated infographic

Drones, eh? They’re everywhere these days. If they’re not helping to inspect EasyJet planes, they’re analysing the performance of the UK’s Olympic BMX cyclists so they can perfect their mad skillz to grab gold, or helping student code-breakers hone their cyber-craft. And that’s just this week. These tend to be your portable drones, mind you, the type you could happily fly in your own back garden (but definitely not in London’s St. James’ Park, no sirree bob). On display at the forthcoming Paris Air Show, there’s going to be some whoppers – the type the military love to lob over … Continue reading Droning on about #drones at the #ParisAirShow – an annotated infographic

#AmazonPrime Air delivery #drones cleared for take-off, almost – an annotated infographic

Amazon, the largest e-commerce company in the US, wants to use autonomous drones to deliver packages to customers. However, it is being frustrated at the slow pace of drone legislation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), so is now testing its Prime Air system in countries more favourable to drones. As E&T News reported recently, while the FAA has issued an experimental airworthiness certificate to an Amazon business unit and its prototype drone, allowing test flights over private rural land in the state of Washington, a British delivery firm has already beaten Amazon to complete the UK’s first test delivery … Continue reading #AmazonPrime Air delivery #drones cleared for take-off, almost – an annotated infographic

E&T news weekly #30 – we choose our favourite engineering and technology news stories from the week

Friday December 12 2014  Tereza Pultarova, online news reporter Construction of first large solar farm in Pakistan gets under way With some 3,000 sunshine hours each year, Pakistan has an enormous potential for renewable energy generation. That potential, however, has so far been largely untapped, mostly due to the complicated economic and political situation in the region. It’s great to see things may be slowly changing (at least in the solar energy generation area). The first large scale solar power plant, the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park, has received a shipment of 100MW-worth of solar panels and is well on track to … Continue reading E&T news weekly #30 – we choose our favourite engineering and technology news stories from the week

What is the future of Unmanned Aerial Systems?

We have visited this year’s Defence and Security Event in London and asked some of the industry insiders about the future of Unmanned Aerial Systems. There are few technologies surrounded at the same time by such anticipation and controversy. They represent the first level in the evolution of autonomous killing machines, helping military forces in armed conflicts to wipe out their enemies without men having to pull the trigger and put their own lives at risk. Some fear their stealthy presence above our heads could threaten our privacy – collecting sensitive information about us far more efficiently than Google Street View. … Continue reading What is the future of Unmanned Aerial Systems?

Underwater #drones to be deployed in the Gulf – an annotated graphic

Drones: now officially everywhere. We’re not talking about the use of sustained tanpura tones underpinning an Indian raga performance here, no sirree bob – we’re talking about them sneaky unmanned vehicles, surreptitiously gliding about the place. Land-based drones, aerial drones and now underwater drones. Land, air and sea – drones. The latest news from Drones Central is the deployment of Seafox UUV (cute name, eh?) underwater unmanned vehicle drones in the Gulf, sent on a search and destroy mission to hunt for mines bobbing in the ocean in order to keep strategic sea lanes open. Up to 40 nations will … Continue reading Underwater #drones to be deployed in the Gulf – an annotated graphic
